At the December Pack meeting Scouts received their Pinewood Derby kits. Now the race is on! The boys have a month to turn a block of wood into a "sleek" racing machine as they prepare for the annual Pinewood Derby. (At a Pinewood Derby, "sleek" can mean everything from a NASCAR-style car to a car shaped as a pencil.) This year, once again, family and friends are welcome to build their own Pinewood Derby car to race. Last year we had five takers but this year who knows. Click here to review the rules of the race and for some helpful videos/articles. (Tip: The United State Post Office is a great place to weigh your car especially if it has a self-service kiosk machine. These machines can be accessed after service counters are closed. Click here and select "self-service kiosks" from the drop-down menu for locations and lobby hours.)
Do you need some assistance designing and building your car? If you answered yes, join us at our Derby Clinic beginning at 6:30 PM on January 5, at Forts Ferry.

SCOUT SUNDAY & BSA ANNIVERSARY
We will once again be celebrating Scout Sunday and thanking our chartered organization, the Latham Community Baptist Church, by attending a special service with Boy Scout Troop 279. The Boy Scouts of America designates the Sunday that falls before February 8 (Scouting Anniversary Day) as Scout Sunday, which is the primary date to recognize the contributions of young people and adults to Scouting. We will assemble at 10:15 on Sunday, February 7, in the basement of the church in full uniform, including hats and blue jeans/Scout pants. Please RSVP by clicking below TODAY.
Q: I am not religious, should I attend?
A: Yes, but it is voluntary. You are attending as a Pack member but you are not required to participate in the specifics of the religion. If we were chartered by another organization, say a VFW, we would attend their ceremony.
Q: My religious obligation conflicts with the time. What should I do?
A: Can you attend a service Saturday night? Check with your pastor or priest if you can attend this service instead.
Q: What about Scout Sabbath or visiting my place of worship?
A: Scouting is made up of many faiths and we welcome the opportunity to learn about the faiths of fellow Scouts. Talk to your Cubmaster.

GREAT TIME HAD AT VALLEYCATS SCOUT NIGHT EXCEPT FOR THUNDERSTORM FORECAST - JULY 17
We had a great time watching the ValleyCats beat the Vermont Lakemonsters 9-2. Three Cub Scouts accompanied by their families sat in section 240 eating hot dogs and chips. With thunderstorms looming the overnighter was postponed. The new night is August 14, so if you couldn't make it on July 17, send Cubmaster Joe an email if you are interested in attending on the new date.
AUGUST 14: GAME AND CAMPING CANCELLED DUE TO RAIN = SAD SCOUTS :(
"ATTENTION FANS: tonight's game has been rained out. If you had tickets for tonight's game you can exchange them at the box office for another game."

WOLVES HIKE PEEBLES ISLAND
The Wolf Den took a trip to Peebles Island State Park in Waterford. They met with a park employee who talked to them about the park. While on their hike, they looked for litter to clean up and made sure not to leave any of their trash behind after stopping for a snack. They enjoyed great views of nature and even saw a bunch of deer. Click here for pics.

BEARS VOLUNTEER @ NE REGIONAL FOOD BANK
On a cold Wednesday night (January 13) the Bear Den ventured out to do a good turn. They volunteered at the NE Regional Food Bank in Latham. "The Regional Food Bank has been helping to feed the poor and hungry in our communities since 1982. It is the only organization of its kind in northeastern New York. The Food Bank collects large donations of food from the food industry and distributes it to charitable agencies serving hungry and disadvantaged people in 23 counties." The Bears helped sort large containers of non-food items such as shampoo, household cleaning materials, linens, etc. Many people do not realize the food bank receives such items from large companies. The items help low-income families stretch their limited budgets and eat better.

WE COLLECTED 714 FOOD ITEMS!
On November 8, Scouts from Pack 66 joined Scouts nationwide for the annual Scouting for Food campaign. During the weekend of November 1, Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 279 dropped off collection bags to our assigned area. Cub Scout Pack 66 returned to those same homes to gather any bags of food donations left for food pantries and similar service organizations. The Scouts covered most of the area shown on the above map (about 5 miles of streets). We collected 714 food items and delivered them to the St. Ambrose food pantry.

2015 PINEWOOD DERBY
We had an awesome Pinewood Derby this year with 33 Scouts racing and eight non-Scouts racing. (Click here for pictures and a video.) A special thanks goes out to Captain Biel for organizing the derby this year and to our other helpers especially Mrs. Symula, Mr. Symula, Mrs.Condon, Mr. Cassella, and our two representatives from Troop 279. All the cars looked great and it was easy to see all the hard work each and every Scout put into his work.
Congratulations to our three winners:
1st: Liam G.
2nd: Jake W.
3rd: Nate F.
The night was also a recruitment success. Looks like we have 6-8 Tigers and then several boys spread out across the other levels. We'll introduce them at our next Pack mtg.

2014-2015 Annual Registration
Due to the impact our current charter schedule has on our families during the holiday season and with the elimination of the 60 day “lapse period” by the National Council, the Twin Rivers Council Executive Board passed a resolution to change our chartering month and process.
Starting in 2016 we will charter from March 1st through February 28th. To accomplish this, we need to adjust our re-charter timeline this year, making the 2015 charter a 14 month charter. This will cause a one-time fee adjustment of $4.00 per member. The charter fees will be $2.00 a month for 14 months instead of 12 months, which means the re-charter fee per youth and adult member will be $28.00 plus $3.00 for accident insurance for a total of $31.00. This adjustment also affects the Boys’ Life subscription fee by two months as well, adjusting the subscription from $12 to $14.

Bears and Webelos Take A Bus Ride and Urban Hike
On April 24 the Bear and Webelos Dens and parents boarded CDTA Bus #182 to downtown Albany for a hike. The group started off with a walk through Washington Park where they learned about the Park Playhouse and the lake's boating dock. They then headed to Lark Street. There they made a stop at Dunkin Donuts and Ben and Jerry's (they chose one or the other) to enjoy a snack while walking around Center Square. Here they learned about carriage houses and especially the one Mr. Fesel use to live in. From there they headed down to the Empire Plaza where they saw the Police and FireFighter memorials and of course ran around the plaza. After that they caught the bus at South Swan and Washington Avenue for the trip back to Newton Plaza.

Bears Go Shopping - March 13
The Bear Den met at the Price Chopper on New Loudon Road to do a little shopping. Scouts worked on the Saving Well, Spending Well Achievement by learning about salaries (occupations), saving, food and vehicles. Each bear chose a career and discovered the average salary, found out how much their favorite vehicle cost, planned out a day's menu and then estimated the cost of one of those meals. They were given Monopoly money and asked to find their items throughout the store (with an adult) and see if they had enough money. Afterwards, the den enjoyed some ice cream an the just opened ice cream station.

Popcorn season is upon us and it's time to raise some money for our Pack, the Council and your individual camp accounts. This year we will have the ability to accept credit cards. As many of you already know, the fall popcorn sale is the main source of funds for the pack. There are three good reasons for your scout to participate:
1) The scouts have fun. Really.
2) The pack earns money. The pack uses this money to pay for everything from the belt loops that the scouts earn, to activities, to the snacks at pack meetings, to the pinewood derby kits.
3) The scouts earn prizes - the more a scout sells, the bigger the prize he earns. If your scout is a real go-getting, a portion of his sales go to a scholarship fund for him to use.
You can individually sell popcorn but we also sell as a Pack at the following Show-and-Sell events. The sales for the day are divided among the Scouts who participate. Please refer to the email from Derek for the link to sign up for table times to support the Pack.

SCOUTING FOR FOOD
WE NEED ALL HANDS ON DECK! On Saturday, November 8, Pack 66 will once again participate in the Boy Scouts of America's annual good turn by collecting bags of food from our surrounding neighborhood. For the past several years the Pack has distributed the bags but this year Troop 279 distributed the empty bags on November 1. You will be assigned an area and can then collect the bags at your leisure between 9am-noon on Saturday, November 8. (Usually you drive in your vehicle and the Scout hops out when you see a bag of food.) Please register below if you are able to help and a Pack representative will contact you.

Of course we had to give George top billing but
he didn't drive himself to Forts Ferry Elementary. He was accompanied by Deputies Strollo (George's handler), Messen and Martel. The three Deputies spent time with us at our Pack meeting on Friday, November 22. They discussed important safety tips and information with the Scouts and family members. The Deputies shared with us the training and daily activities involved with a K9 Unit. The Scouts, many of whom recently worked on the Law Enforcement Achievement, had many questions about law enforcement and of course George. The highlight of the night was when Deputy Strollo, brought in his K9 partner, George, a three-year-old German Shepherd. George showed off his skills by searching for practice "scent boxes" simulating illegal substances and alerting Deputy Strollo when they were located. He then received his favorite reward, some play time with Deputy Strollo. Afterwards the Deputies allowed each and every Scout and some parents and siblings to say hello and pet George. Click here for more pictures.

Air out your tents and your sleeping bags. It’s time for the Pack 66 Fall Family Camp Out!
Last year we ventured to Moreau Lake Sate Park for a family camp out and everybody had fun. We’re doing it again this year on Saturday, September 27, -Sunday, September 28. For more information about the park itself and directions to the park check out their website by clicking here. The boys will also have the opportunity to earn achievements or complete portions of achievements throughout the
day through scout activities planned for the boys at our campsite. Around 12:00pm we will begin gathering at the group campsite. We will have a group hike and cookout at dinner time. The Scouts will assist in preparing the meal and cleanup. We are asking anyone who plans to join us for dinner to contribute $5 per person to help with the cost of food (the pack will cover the rest of the cost) and to bring a dish to pass. After dinner we will have a campfire with skits and Smores and will hopefully get a little sleep after that.
Families are encouraged to participate in any portion of the activities that fit in your schedule. Feel free to come after soccer or football and join us for part of the day. You can also stay for the day and leave after dinner if you are not into sleeping in a tent and just want to checkout the whole situation for next time. However, do not be afraid to camp. We will be holding counseling/info sessions for those afraid of tents and the ground. A number of us have extra gear to share with those who need it. This is a good introduction to camping. Here are some pictures from last year. Notice the nice bathrooms only steps away.
A quick reminder of some official BSA rules for Family Camp Outs:
- All children need to have an adult parent or guardian with them. The guardian cannot be an unrelated adult leader in the Pack.
- For the overnight camping part, children can share sleeping quarters with related adults or unrelated children but not with unrelated adults (even an adult scout leader).
- Alcohol is not permitted at Cub Scout/Boy Scout events.
- No pets permitted.

We are now collecting dues for 2014. Dues for 2014 are $27 which includes membership and insurance. If you want a subscription to Boys Life that is an additional $12. Please make checks payable to "Cub Scout Pack 66." These dues are paid to council to register your son with BSA and pay for liability insurance, the pack does not keep any portion of these dues. The absolute deadline for dues is December 9, but there will not be another Pack meeting before then. Dues may be given to your den leader or the treasurer, Cheryl Condon. If you have any questions or concerns regarding dues please do not hesitate to contact me directly through email or by phone.
Our fall recruitment has gone quite well. We began with a recruitment night at Forts Ferry Elementary where we spent time educating new parents about Scouting and Pack 66 while the boys were mesmerized by The Bug Guy. He brought several static displays and also some live ones like his Tarantula. Over the next several weeks we brought aboard a new Tiger here and there and the den is now seven Tigers strong. Add to that a couple Wolves and Webelos and the Pack is alive and well. Click here for more Recruitment Night photos.
Pack 66 held a Pinewood Derby Clinic to help parents and Scouts as they build their cars for the upcoming derby. Mr. Fesel began the night with an overview of the building process from beginning to end, including painting. Mr. Biel, with his band saw, was the star of the night as he was able to quickly help with the rough cuts. Scouts spent the night refining their rough cuts with hand saws and sand paper. "Build a Little Birdhouse in Your Soul" -TMBGThe Wolves "ventured" to Lowes store #1177 in Latham (less than 1 mile way) to work on Achievement #5. The boys and their parents completed a tool scavenger hunt and then discussed the various tools and their uses. Then it was on to building a birdhouse from a kit which involved some planning and hammering. (Mr. Fesel had the option of cutting the wood for each birdhouse from stock wood but decided to go with the kits) Luckily, Lowes was nice enough to assign a sales associate to help the den (aka parents) out.
BLUE & GOLD BANQUET
March 20, 2015
6:00 -8:30 pm
Shaker Rd Fire Dept
In 1933 "Cub Leaders' Round Table" suggested Parent / Cub dinners. Soon thereafter, Pack 1 of Michigan City started a tradition of pot-lucks where the dads were to bring utensils made of wood; whittled by the Cub with his dad. In the 1930s father / son 'bean dinners' and 'Cub family dinners' began to become commonplace. Finally, in 1943 the name "Blue and Gold Banquet" first appeared in BSA literature, and became synonymous with "celebrating the birthday of Scouting."
Today, the Blue and Gold banquet is one of the highlights of the program year. It brings together our Pack's families for a dinner and an evening to celebrate the awarding of the Arrow of Light, Cub Scout's highest achievement. The meal is important, but even more important is the warm, congenial atmosphere created as families enjoy each other's company.

SCOUT SUNDAY & BSA ANNIVERSARY
This year, February 8, was a special day for Scouting. The anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America and Scout Sunday fell on the same day. (This will not happen again until 2026.) Pack 66 celebrated the day and thanked our chartered organization, the Latham Community Baptist Church, by attending a special service with Boy Scout Troop 279. Six Cub Scouts and 15 Boy Scouts attended the service. The service centered on Scouting values and also included an excellent video produced by Troop 279.
