Lisha Kill Preserve Pack Hike
On August 19, we will be taking a Pack Hike at the Lisha Kill Preserve. The Lisha Kill Preserve, owned by the Nature Conservancy, is a rare example of an old growth forest in a developed area. Some of trees (Eastern white pine and Eastern hemlock) are estimated to be well over 200 years old. I would classify this hike as low to moderate. There is a steep portion at the very beginning of the trail but the rest of the hike is mostly level and well-worn. Basically, the hike will be a little more difficult than the Peebles Island hike. The hike is about 1.7 miles and should take no more than two hours.
We will meet at 10:00am at Forts Ferry Elementary to meet and consolidate vehicles as the Lisha Kill Preserve's parking lot is not the largest, and then be on our way.
What to bring/wear:
▪ Sneakers or hiking boots with socks. No Crocs!
▪ Appropriate clothing (aka. shorts and a t-shirt, no uniform)
▪ Water
▪ Small Snack
▪ Camera (optional)
▪ Raincoat (depending on the weather)
▪ Bug spray
▪ Hat and/or sunglasses (optional)
▪ Knapsack or buttpack (optional)- you will need to carry your supplies and you should be
hands-free during a hike
▪ Pack leadership will have a first aid kit on hand.
What not to bring:
▪ Electronic devices including cell phones. If you need to make a call to be picked up at the
end of the hike, a cell phone will be provided by an adult leader. Any electronic devices will be taken and
returned to your parent/guardian.
▪ Pets
▪ Parents who choose to bring siblings along will be responsible for their safety and for making sure that
they keep up with the other hikers. Parents should exercise caution when deciding whether to bring a
sibling along as one of the stated purposes of the Hiking Program is that it is for exercise, and therefore
we want to keep everyone moving.
