Pinewood Derby: January 17, 2014
At the December Pack meeting Scouts received a small gift-wrapped package from the Wolf Den - their Pinewood Derby kits. Now the race is on! The boys have a month to turn a block of wood into a "sleek" racing machine as they prepare for the annual Pinewood Derby. (At a Pinewood Derby "sleek" can mean everything from a NASCAR-style car to a car shaped as a pencil.)This year, once again, family and friends were offered the chance to build their own Pinewood Derby car to race. Last year we had two takers but this year eight kits were handed out. Click here to review the rules of the race and for some helpful videos/articles. (Tip: The United State Post Office is a great place to weigh your car especially if it has a self-service kiosk machine. These machines can be accessed after service counters are closed. Click here and select "self-service kiosks" from the drop-down menu for locations and lobby hours.)
Pinewood Derby Clinic: January 9, 2014
Pack 66 held a Pinewood Derby Clinic to help parents and Scouts as they build their cars for the upcoming derby. Mr. Fesel began the night with an overview of the building process from beginning to end, including painting. Mr. Biel, with his band saw, was the star of the night as he was able to quickly help with the rough cuts. Scouts spent the night refining their rough cuts with hand saws and sand paper. Albany County Sherriff's Department K-9 Officer George Visits Pack
Of course we had to give George top billing but
he didn't drive himself to Forts Ferry Elementary. He was accompanied by Deputies Strollo (George's handler), Messen and Martel. The three Deputies spent time with us at our Pack meeting on Friday, November 22. They discussed important safety tips and information with the Scouts and family members. The Deputies shared with us the training and daily activities involved with a K9 Unit. The Scouts, many of whom recently worked on the Law Enforcement Achievement, had many questions about law enforcement and of course George. The highlight of the night was when Deputy Strollo, brought in his K9 partner, George, a three-year-old German Shepherd. George showed off his skills by searching for practice "scent boxes" simulating illegal substances and alerting Deputy Strollo when they were located. He then received his favorite reward, some play time with Deputy Strollo. Afterwards the Deputies allowed each and every Scout and some parents and siblings to say hello and pet George. 2014 Dues or Now Due!
We are now collecting dues for 2014. Dues for 2014 are $27 which includes membership and insurance. If you want a subscription to Boys Life that is an additional $12. Please make checks payable to "Cub Scout Pack 66." These dues are paid to council to register your son with BSA and pay for liability insurance, the pack does not keep any portion of these dues. The absolute deadline for dues is December 9, but there will not be another Pack meeting before then. Dues may be given to your den leader or the treasurer, Cheryl Condon. If you have any questions or concerns regarding dues please do not hesitate to contact me directly through email or by phone.
Scouts Deliver Bags for Scouting for Food
Over the weekend of November 1, Scouts nationwide delivered bags to homes in their communities for the annual Scouting for Food campaign. Cub Scout Pack 66 covered most of the area shown on the above map (about 5 miles of streets). During the weekend of November 8, Scouts will return to those same homes to gather any bags of food donations left for food pantries and similar service organizations. Scouts from Troop 279 will pick up the bags left by Pack 66 for delivery to the NE Regional Food Bank.
Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts Visit Howe Caverns
On November 3, a group of Boy Scouts from Troop 279 and Cub Scouts from Pack 66 visited Howe Cavern. The trip was fun. They had a picnic afterward and froze (it was overcast and windy and about 37 degrees) but all in all
everyone had a good time.
Cub Scouts Volunteer at NE Regional Food Bank's Farm
Cub Scouts from Pack 66 volunteered on October 20, at the NE Regional Food Bank's Patroon Land Farm in Voorheesville. It was a sunny and breezy morning and the Scouts and their parents harvested an entire row of beets. They pulled the beets, pruned them and bunched them with rubber bands. The Food Bank will include the beets in the vegetables they distribute to various agencies in 29 counties. One Scouts comment "This was way more fun than I thought it would be. Can we stay longer?" Moreau State Park Camping Trip Lots of Fun
The Pack had another fun weekend camping at Moreau State Park the weekend of September 28.Ten families participated with eight of them camping overnight. Collecting tadpoles and frogs was the big highlight (catch and release) of the day with skits and s'mores in front of a campfire at night. Click here for more photos.
Successful Recruiting Night!
Our fall recruitment has gone quite well. We began with a recruitment night at Forts Ferry Elementary where we spent time educating new parents about Scouting and Pack 66 while the boys were mesmerized by The Bug Guy. He brought several static displays and also some live ones like his Tarantula. Over the next several weeks we brought aboard a new Tiger here and there and the den is now seven Tigers strong. Add to that a couple Wolves and Webelos and the Pack is alive and well. Click here for more Recruitment Night photos.
BSA Resolution Approved, Membership Policy Changes
"On May 24, 2013, the 1,400 voting members of the Boy Scouts of America's National Council approved a resolution to remove the restriction denying membership to youth on the basis of sexual orientation alone. This policy change is effective Jan. 1, 2014, allowing the Boy Scouts of America the transition time needed to communicate and implement this policy to its approximately 116,000 Scouting units."
